People's Select Committee on Pay Equity

The People’s Select Committee has been established by a group of 10 former women MPs from across the political spectrum to hear submissions from individuals and groups who were not able to be heard on the Equal Pay Amendment Bill 2025 as the Bill was passed under urgency.

The new Act, introduced by the Coalition Government on 06 May 2025 and passed into law on 15 May 2025, is having a detrimental impact on current and future pay equity claims. All existing pay equity claims were cancelled and any pay equity claims now need to be refiled under the new law. However, unions are extremely concerned that the process, which was already extremely difficult, may become impossible.

Equal Pay is a human right and the new law will make it harder for workers to correct sex-based discrimination through the pay equity process. Scroll down for more information about the changes and what they mean.

The People’s Select Committee on Pay Equity will gather public submissions so the voices of the people of Aotearoa can still be heard. Submissions are open 26 May - 31 July 2025.

We’re encouraging NZNO members to make a submission. Share your story and perspective. Make sure the voices of nurses and health workers are heard.

Have your say. Tell the People’s Select Committee why you OPPOSE the Equal Pay Amendment Act.

Share your story. Some things you could include in your submission:

  • What would Pay Equity mean for you.
  • What would Pay Equity mean for your family.
  • What would Pay Equity mean for your patients / residents.
  • What would Pay Equity mean for nursing in this country.
  • What would Pay Equity mean for health care in this country.
